   Welcome to the December edition

Who Do You Think You Are? - Live

Despite the publicity we and the media have given to the closure of the Family Records Centre from the end of March 2008, and the departure of the General Register Office from the ground floor of the FRC which has already taken place, many visitors to FRC seem to be unaware of this.  Please may we encourage societies to publicise this at meetings and on websites.

For more positive news see the items on our website about Colindale and also the London Metropolitan Archives.

We have prepared a survey to gain a better understanding of the overall situation concerning archives repositories in England and Wales. There are also questions to help us understand how best to serve our members with regard to archives.  We are pleased that completed forms are being received and you can download a form by clicking here.

This year we have attended 12 meetings to make our voice heard including meetings with the FRC, LMA and the National Council on Archives.  The Federation is also represented at regional level.

Finally, may we extend Christmas greetings to you all and best wishes for your researches in the new year.

Following the partnership between the FFHS and findmypast.com announced earlier this year, data from the National Burial Index going back to 1538 has been put online at www.findmypast.com

Searching NBI data at findmypast.com is free. To view the results, you either need an Explorer subscription or units. To get you started, we’ve arranged a special discount with findmypast.com. To save 15% on an annual Explorer subscription, enter the promotional code FFHS8SUB in the relevant field on the subscription payment page. Or, to save 15% on the cost of units, simply enter the promotional code FFHS8UNITS in the appropriate field. Units and subscriptions can be used to access any of the datasets on the site.

Participating societies earn royalties each time their data is accessed and promote their society in their own section of the findmypast website, benefiting from the company’s considerable online and offline marketing investment. At launch, 50 societies had already signed up.

Currently findmypast is developing a free indexing tool for the societies with input from FFHS, which will allow image and data capture to be standardised. All family history societies are invited to participate in this ongoing project, which will ultimately link transcriptions and indexes to images and will include censuses and parish records.

In the meantime, FamilyHistoryOnline will continue to offer its high quality data at www.familyhistoryonline.net until the Spring 2008.

A big thank you to everyone who joined in the bidding to be Practical Family History magazine’s VIP Guest Editor for a Day, in the recently held eBay TopLots auction for charities. A tidy sum of £255 was raised, 80 per cent of which will be donated to PFH’s chosen charity, the Federation of Family History Societies; the remaining 20 per cent goes to the Association of Independent Museums (AIM) to cover its administration costs of organising the auction.

The successful bidder will be revealed in the April 2008 issue of PFH, along with a report on how they enjoyed their day at the helm of the UK’s leading genealogy magazine for newcomers to family history.

In all, 127 lots were posted on eBay’s TopLots site – offering great days out at museums and places of historical interest, rare experiences and donated artworks and other items – raising a total of almost £30,000 for Britain’s deserving heritage charities and organisations.

     1911 Irish Census

On December 6, 2005, Library and Archives Canada signed a groundbreaking cultural agreement with the National Archives of Ireland at a ceremony in Dublin. The agreement is to have the Irish Census records for 1901 and 1911 digitized, indexed and placed online for free access by the 70 million descendants of the worldwide Irish diaspora. The first phase of the Irish census project (County Dublin 1911) was launched December 3, 2007.

Subsequent phases of additional counties for 1911, followed by 1901 will be added over the course of 2008.
Full details on the order in which counties will be made available can be found on the National Archives website.

Ireland is unique among English-speaking census-taking countries in that the original household manuscript returns survive (as filled in and signed by heads of households,) rather than just the enumerators books (as with England, Scotland and Wales)
The online version includes both a transcription as well as scanned images of each page. You can search the transcriptions for names, then click on a link to see the original image.

All change at the Genealogical Society of Utah

The Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU) began microfilming British records in 1945, including civil registration indexes, census records, church records, probate records and other records useful for understanding and linking families. Nearly every major record office in the United Kingdom and Ireland has been assisted by the GSU in preserving and making records more accessible. The GSU's services are now expanded and improved, but will continue under a new name - FamilySearch Records Access.

FamilySearch is working hard to convert its millions of microfilms to digital formats and replacing its hundreds of film cameras with digital versions, to increase accessibility via the Internet. Additionally over one hundred thousand volunteer indexers from all over the globe are logging on to FamilySearchIndexing.org to index these records. The indexes are being linked to images of the original documents and are available online at www.FamilySearch.org, the record custodian's, or an affiliate's site.

The Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU) doing business as FamilySearch is a non-profit organization sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  FamilySearch maintains the world's largest repository of genealogical resources and can be accessed  at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah  via any of its 4,500 family history centres worldwide or online through www.FamilySearch.org.                                                                                     Top of page

30-year rule review - terms of reference published

The Prime Minister announced on 25 October that he has commissioned a review of when historical records are transferred to The National Archives and largely opened to public access. This currently happens 30 years after an event, and the Prime Minister's review will look at whether this period should be reduced. Any changes in this area could have the effect of speeding up access to many records.
