Despite the publicity we and the media have given to the closure of the Family Records Centre from the end of March 2008, and the departure of the General Register Office from the ground floor of the FRC which has already taken place, many visitors to FRC seem to be unaware of this. Please may we encourage societies to publicise this at meetings and on websites. For more positive news see the items on our website about Colindale and also the London Metropolitan Archives. We have prepared a survey to gain a better understanding of the overall situation concerning archives repositories in England and Wales. There are also questions to help us understand how best to serve our members with regard to archives. We are pleased that completed forms are being received and you can download a form by clicking here. This year we have attended 12 meetings to make our voice heard including meetings with the FRC, LMA and the National Council on Archives. The Federation is also represented at regional level. Finally, may we extend Christmas greetings to you all and best wishes for your researches in the new year.
Maureen Bullows and
Roger Lewry Following the partnership between the FFHS and findmypast.com announced earlier this year, data from the National Burial Index going back to 1538 has been put online at www.findmypast.com Searching NBI data at findmypast.com is free. To view the results, you either need an Explorer subscription or units. To get you started, we’ve arranged a special discount with findmypast.com. To save 15% on an annual Explorer subscription, enter the promotional code FFHS8SUB in the relevant field on the subscription payment page. Or, to save 15% on the cost of units, simply enter the promotional code FFHS8UNITS in the appropriate field. Units and subscriptions can be used to access any of the datasets on the site. Participating societies earn royalties each time their data is accessed and promote their society in their own section of the findmypast website, benefiting from the company’s considerable online and offline marketing investment. At launch, 50 societies had already signed up. Currently findmypast is developing a free indexing tool for the societies with input from FFHS, which will allow image and data capture to be standardised. All family history societies are invited to participate in this ongoing project, which will ultimately link transcriptions and indexes to images and will include censuses and parish records. In the meantime, FamilyHistoryOnline will continue to offer its high quality data at www.familyhistoryonline.net until the Spring 2008. more information about the online partnership visit > A big thank you to everyone who joined in the bidding to be Practical Family History magazine’s VIP Guest Editor for a Day, in the recently held eBay TopLots auction for charities. A tidy sum of £255 was raised, 80 per cent of which will be donated to PFH’s chosen charity, the Federation of Family History Societies; the remaining 20 per cent goes to the Association of Independent Museums (AIM) to cover its administration costs of organising the auction. The successful bidder will be revealed in the April 2008 issue of PFH, along with a report on how they enjoyed their day at the helm of the UK’s leading genealogy magazine for newcomers to family history. In all, 127 lots were posted on eBay’s TopLots site – offering great days out at museums and places of historical interest, rare experiences and donated artworks and other items – raising a total of almost £30,000 for Britain’s deserving heritage charities and organisations.
