The names of the counties under which the societies are listed are mainly the traditional administrative counties (also referred to as the "historic" counties) that existed prior to the 1974 Local Government re-organisation. Some of the societies, however, reflect the newer administrative county areas that were then created (e.g. Cumbria FHS covers the original traditional counties of Cumberland and Westmorland).
