Essex Manorial Records
Manorial documents are items such as court rolls, surveys, maps and terriers. They can reveal family relationships as well as provide unique evidence about where our forebears lived and worked. The National Archives (TNA) maintains the Manorial Documents Register (MDR) to identify the nature and location of such records.
Essex has recently joined the counties for which the MDR can be searched online. Work is currently moving forward to enable a further 11 counties to reach that stage.
It is well-worth visiting the TNA website to:
- Check on progress in computerising the Register.
- Find out how to access the Register, whether the manors you are interested in are at present online or not.
